There is always something to be grateful for. A bright sunny day, people who love you, food to eat and most importantly, a life you can do anything with! Gratitude is rejoicing in what is. It is the realization that even in your worst times, there is so much you're blessed with.

Being thankful when things are good is easy, but when the going gets tough, being grateful gets tougher. At such times, make a conscious effort to stay positive. Being grateful is a choice. We need to create feelings of gratitude by deliberately counting our blessings. Happiness is not what makes us grateful. It is gratitude that makes us happy.

Your mind is powerful and your thoughts a form of energy. You receive what you send out into the Universe as thoughts. So when you're feeling lost, think happy thoughts and give thanks to the Universe for the little things it bestows on you instead of feeling dejected. The Universe will return the love.

Having said that, being grateful does not mean feigning positivity. It is not the absence of pain. Crying is okay, ranting is okay. We experience a myriad of emotions. Practicing gratitude teaches you to have faith even in the face of adversity. It helps you cultivate enough strength to understand that difficulties help you grow. Instead of getting bogged down by your emotions, it pushes you to focus on all the great things you're blessed with.
